1. Preheat oven to 200C. Brush a large loaf tin with melted butter and line base and sides with baking paper. Put flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and pepper into a food processor.
2. Add butter to dry ingredients and process until mixture is like fine breadcrumbs. Transfer to a large bowl, add cheese and onion and stir until combined.
3. Add egg to milk and whisk with a fork until well combined. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Add the combined milk and egg and mix with a table knife to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
4. Put mixture evenly into prepared loaf tin. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until bread is golden and sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from oven and stand on wire rack for 5 minutes before turning out. Cut slices before serving.
